This interactive Hot Topic will explore the leadership shift between school, organisation and system-level leadership, and how leadership changes when the context and boundaries in which leaders operate change.
An opportunity for leaders to reflect on their own leadership journey, how context shapes leadership, and what they may need to unlearn, relearn and rethink when moving across different levels of the education system.

Speakers
Dr Helen Aguiar
AISWA Director, School Programs and Services and former Principal of Perth College

Jim Bell
Partner, Centre for Performance & Insight; former Acting Director General, Deputy Director General – Student Achievement, Director and school principal

The discussion will explore questions including:
• What surprised you most about leading at a different level of the system?
• Which leadership practices transferred seamlessly, and which did not?
• Did your understanding of influence change?
• What became harder? What became easier?
• How did your understanding of context change?
• What did you learn about the relationship between strategy and implementation?
• Do leadership capabilities such as strategic thinking, communication, relationship building and change leadership mean the same thing when the system in which they operate changes?
