NSW Branch News: November 2023

By Paul Kidson posted 02-11-2023 12:00

It’s just over a month since the ACEL 50th Annual Conference held in Brisbane, and the glow of the celebrations continue; if you haven’t seen the highlights video, you can do so here. It was great to see so many NSW educational leaders there. The richness of ACEL is its breadth and inclusivity, so to bring together over 600 educational leaders from early childhood to tertiary education, and from all three school sectors, was a wonderful testimony to what has been achieved in our first 50 years. As we were encouraged at the conference, let’s celebrate our heritage and use this to springboard us from the present and into our future.

Sydney played host to the recent “AI in Education” conference produced by The Hatchery (October 24 and 25), with ACEL a key sponsor of the event. It was great to see our association involved with bringing together major curriculum, pedagogy, and educational leadership voices to explore the ongoing, and rapidly shifting, landscape of AI. The feedback has been very positive and testimony to ACEL’s vital role in these important conversations.

October 24 was also a very special day for the NSW Branch. We held our formal handover of Executive Committee membership at the National Office in Sydney. Outgoing Branch President, Dr Kylie Lipscombe, and retiring Committee members joined together with incoming committee members in a symbol of our ongoing stewardship of the NSW Branch. We also explored how we can continue to serve and enrich the NSW Branch as we look to the next three years.

Even as the year heads to its close, ACEL (NSW) professional learning continues with vigour. On November 7, we will hold our inaugural Mastering Middle Leadership Conference. The opportunities and demands of middle leadership have gained their right and proper attention recently, and our conference brings together rich insights from practitioners and researchers. With nearly 100 already registered, there’ll be plenty of positive conversations to be had, too. We’d love to see you there.

Looking further ahead, we are delighted NSW will be welcoming Adam Grant to Sydney on February 22, 2024 – mark it on your calendar as a “not to miss”.

Our Federal Minister, Jason Clare, MP, yesterday released the trailer of a soon to be launched advertising campaign showcasing some of the joys and rewards of school teaching. It features several teachers reflecting on the impact they have had on those lives entrusted to their care through the lens of gifts their students have given to them. If you haven’t seen it already on other media, check out his LinkedIn launch.

Finally, in the midst of the busyness that characterises this time of the year in schools, remember to take care of yourselves, so that you can take care of those entrusted to your care.
