QLD Branch News: February 2024

By Elizabeth Foster posted 06-02-2024 11:22

As the Queensland Executive, we look forward in 2024 to our continuing contribution towards a national organisation that positively promotes and shapes educational leadership and capability building across sectors and states, nationally and internationally.

ACELQ 2024

Our Queensland Branch Executive of Bruce Addison, Lee Catterall, Tameika Grist, John O’Sullivan Williams, Sarah Gunn, Daniel Johnson, Adam Kuss and Tania Leach will gather for the first time in February as we consider the following:

  • What actions will facilitate connections across all education sectors in Queensland?
  • With strength in membership and connections in the south-east area of the state, how will we encourage contribution from our colleagues in other parts of Queensland?
  • Where do we currently see Queensland actions aligned to ACEL Strategic Pillars?
  • How will our learnings in Queensland contribute to ACEL as a national organisation?

As we work towards connecting professionals across our state, we are delighted to host a meet and greet with members in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.  To be held on Tuesday 20th February we see this as an opportunity to welcome current and aspiring educational leaders for an afternoon in conversation. We thank the Diocese of Toowoomba, Catholic Schools Office, The Micah Centre, for hosting us between 4:00 and 6:00pm.

Topic: Middle Leaders as Provocateurs & Critical Friends

Wednesday 6th March, 5:00 – 6:30pm

Dom Piacun: Head of Secondary at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield

Joanna Gardiner: Head of English at Somerville House

We know that middle leaders hold complex roles in schools. They lead teams of teachers, teach classes and also exist as a conduit to senior leadership. Often, middle leaders find themselves leaning on their middle leader peers for mentoring, professional and sometimes emotional support. They also look to their peers to challenge and provoke their thinking when difficult situations in management or leadership arise. The value of a trusted provocateur or critical friend can be important for middle leader growth, as these leaders learn to navigate their roles on the job and over time. Joining the Brisbane Pivotal People network to share their experience, perspective, and ideas about Middle Leaders as provocateurs are Dominic Piacun, Head of Secondary years at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield, and Joanna Gardiner, Head of English at Somerville House. Join us for an afternoon of intellectually stimulating conversation and networking.
