Collaborative Innovation: Harnessing Teacher and Student Beliefs and Agency for Positive Educational Impact (3-Webinar series)

ACEL NSW Branch presents a three-part webinar series on maximising collective potential in organisations. World-renowned author Jenni Donohoo begins with theory and research on effective collaboration. Two follow-up sessions focus on practical application, demonstrating how to engage teachers and students as active contributors to organisational goals. Aligning actions with agency enhances effort and efficiency. Participants will interact with other educators, share ideas, and receive practical resources for their organisations. This series aims to equip leaders with strategies to achieve their goals through collaborative practices.

Session 1
Dr. Jenni Donohoo
Wednesday Aug 14th 4pm-5:30pm

Creating Collaborative Cultures through Beliefs and Agency
How do you move beyond faculty meetings and contrived collegiality to a truly collaborative culture? Creating the conditions in which every teacher sees themselves as a meaningful contributor requires intentionality. Through this interactive session and guided discussions, educators will gain practical tools to elevate their collaborative practices and improve student outcomes. We will explore theories of action, a taxonomy for examining collaboration, the difference between performance-based and mastery goals, and knowing thy collective impact.  Learn strategies to enhance professional practice through effective collaboration, evidence-based impact assessment, and increased agency.

Session 2
Dr. Kirsten Macaulay
Wednesday September 11th 4pm- 5:30pm

Creating the Conditions for Collective Teacher Agency
Teachers are the key drivers of change when schools implement new practices or innovations. To build collective teacher agency requires both the opportunity and empowerment to act. Channelling their efforts towards common goals necessitates collaborative partnerships among teachers and school leaders. School leaders must guide teachers to define their role and responsibility to ensure they contribute to school-wide goals and intended outcomes. This session invites school leaders to commit to action and understand how to best engage teachers in their collaborative innovations. Participants will learn to build capabilities and increase collective teacher agency through deliberate practices and shared expectations. The workshop offers research-based tools to transform teaching practices via collective goal setting and problem-solving, fostering trust, reflection, and active listening.

Session 3
Sue Bryen
Wednesday November 13th 4pm-5:30pm

Fostering Student Agency through Collaborative Partnerships
Students are often overlooked in collaborative efforts for new practices or innovations. Building student agency requires giving them opportunities to act. Fostering respectful partnerships between students and teachers aligns student actions with common goals. Educators must teach students their roles as valued contributors to school-wide impact. This involves listening authentically to students, inviting their insights, and collaboratively evaluating outcomes. When students feel respected, they're more likely to commit to achieving challenging goals. This session encourages educators to include students in collaborative innovations, demonstrating ways to build capabilities and increase student agency through deliberate practices, interactions, and shared expectations.
