Message from the President, Term 1 2024

As we begin a new year, there is a sense of renewal and excitement of the possibilities ahead. We work in different branches of education, but the demands, professionally and personally, are demands we have in common. Education is a profession that recognises the need to refuel, restore, and rejuvenate so that growth can happen year to year. For us to thrive, we must honour the ebb and flow. It is a profession that relies on knowing that if you invest in the lives of the young and old, you must invest and take care of yourself. You cannot give what you do not have. It takes time to sit at the feet of experienced people, listen to their words of wisdom, and plant seeds in our lives that we feed and water. We must grow ourselves if we presume to invest in the growth of others.

Yet, education is such a complex and evolving landscape that it is easy to get lost in the daily rhetoric on change and growth. Social forces, employment pressures, mental health challenges, employee management issues, complex extended family dynamics, and, of course, government mandates and initiatives and decisions are among the complexities. Then we have AI and STEM, the moving feast of rapidly evolving technologies intertwined by the slightly delayed ethical responses, which are challenges in our classrooms and lecture halls.

Below the noise, the energy, and the relentless flood of things to think about and to grapple with, and on which we are expected to have an opinion, we are undergirded by strength, a bow that keeps our ship in ballast. The roots of a tree go down to the soul of the earth, allowing its branches to grow tall, stirring and reaching for the sun. Education is timeless. Education is grounded in what it means to be human, how we interact in society, and why we aspire to be better people today than we were yesterday.

You cannot have one without the other. The branches, like change and complexity, are magnificent, complex, and exciting. But without a root structure, they will go nowhere. Our roots are strong, wise, and solid, but without branches, there is no growth or response to the winds of changing times. We need both. Ebb and flow, action and rest, branches and roots. Not one or the other, but both.

This edition of AEL recognises that the education landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, challenging us to think about the traditional constructs of schooling. It is not just the experiences of our students that remain steadfastly front of mind but also the recruitment, retention, and diversity of our educational staff. Education must be the very beacon of progressive workplace practices as we rethink how to invest in our staff.

For our staff and students, STEM education remains a cornerstone for preparing students for the future. Its integration into school life has become imperative to equip us all with essential skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and innovation. Beyond mere incorporation, its implementation should encourage creativity, interdisciplinary learning, and real-world applications.

Likewise, AI no longer looms on the horizon – it is here, now. It can potentially assist us in radically rethinking learning experiences through personalising education, adaptive assessing, and data-driven insights. Yet, how can it affect the role of human interaction in education? Where are the ethical guidelines? What about those who are already struggling with the digital divide?

The journey to reimagining schools is multifaceted, requiring an amalgamation of visionary leadership, adaptable systems, and a relentless commitment to equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in the rapidly evolving world. We embark on this journey together, guided by a shared vision of a future where boundaries do not confine education but instead serve as a catalyst for innovation, growth, and empowerment. And we do so, knowing the fundamental roots of education lie in the hearts and minds of educators who have taken the time to rest, invest, and grow themselves and their practice.

I commend this edition of AEL to you and wish you all the best for a magnificent 2024.
