VIC Patron’s Oration
Patron’s Oration by Dr Fiona Longmuir, Senior Lecturer, Culture and Society, Faculty of Education, Monash University
Re-imagined educational leaders for re-imagined Australian schooling - a case for urgent transformation
Imagination is regularly coined in narratives about the future of schooling. However, breaking the bonds of the "traditional grammars" that constrain the way that we offer education to children and young people has proven challenging - no matter how much imagination we aspire to. In this oration, I take our Patron, Professor Brian Caldwell's notions of imagination described in his almost 20-year-old book Re-imagining Educational Leadership as a starting point and bring arguments for transformative change into conversation with contemporary calls for more equitable and socially just Australian schools. I draw on my research with students, teachers, and school leaders to show why activist educational leaders are needed now more than ever as we navigate a critical juncture in Australian education characterised by crisis and volatility, but also by opportunity, and ultimately hope for the future.
Presentation of the 2024 ACEL Victoria Awards
A highlight each year for the Australian Council for Educational Leaders Victoria Branch (ACEL VIC) is the annual presentation of Fellowships and leadership awards. It is through these awards that ACEL VIC honours educational leaders who have made a significant contribution to education, educational leadership and the improvement of child or student learning outcomes, teacher professional practice and/or effectiveness.
Please join us in celebration as worthy educators receive well deserved recognition for their outstanding leadership and extraordinary service to education.
